I love mercury glass! But it's so expensive! Even modern-day recreations are pretty pricey. So, you can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon
Krylon's mercury glass
spray paint called, Looking Glass (see last photo for example)!!! I'm considering speckling a little "antique gold leaf" (it's more bronze than gold) in my
votives, followed by a few coats of the Looking Glass paint... Anyhow, I'm off to the art store and then Michael's (which is out in the burbs, big surprise, but everything is 20-40% off today from 4pm - 8pm!!). I hope to have an example for you by next week.
The two top photos are the real thing, the next two are modern day recreations, and the last is the
DIY version. Of course, the
DIY version isn't NEARLY as nice, but it will be dark during the reception!!!!

I loooove the look of mercury glass and really wanted to use it for my wedding. And was also going to 'DIY recreate' but never got around to getting somewhere that had the stuff in stock! Can't wait to see how it turns out for you.

so how do you get the effect? just spray the stuff on? or is there some other thing you have to do?
Yep, but be sure to do short, quick sprays - the longer the spray, the streakier it gets. My best advice is to buy extra cylander vases and start way early...because I ruined about half of my stock and it took me FOREVER! (in the end , I ditched the project because I ran out of time...)
Wow, I've been wanting to make a mirrored buffet for my dining room for quite some time, and this is perfect! Every few months I google 'DIY mercury glass,' and this is the first time I've found anything. Thanks! Do you use real gold leaf foil, or some kind of gold leaf effect paint?

How did you achieve the vintage mercury effect on the candle holders? I contacted Krylon and they were no help. We'd like to use these for my daughers wedding but hate to spend a fortune on votives. Thanks,

I am going to try making candleholders to use at a wedding reception and wondered whether it is necessary to use the goldleaf or can I just use the spray paint alone?
